The reconsideration of a new and more ‘human’ relation between space and time becomes a need to rediscover the human potentials, which are now anaesthetised due to the sensorial acceleration which has made us lose the sense of things. A thinking cap to go beyond that mechanicity which simplifies information throughout existing parameters of the memory, and to regain possession of that consciousness with an impulse of freedom and creativity.
A sensorial revitalisation which necessarily passes through the power of colours and their frequencies. Every single vibration perceived with awareness and consciousness allows us to experience the passage from the inner to outer reality to which a dynamic reality and perpetual movement correspond. This thought abolishes the barriers between material and spiritual, thus creating a new feel; a new integrated and dynamic living.
The research Stefano Russo carries out is a path to knowledge which dissects, analyses to then finally recompose one of the most complex organs of the human being: the eye. It is also a research within the depth of our beings; the harmony between physical and intellectual, rational and emotional which define us. Physics, metaphysics, art and science, logic and emotion. Visible luminous frequencies send re-elaborated informations – depending on each individual’s genetic baggage – to our neurological system through the eye. Because of this, we don’t perceive reality as it objectively is; it occurs through cerebral perceptions which interpret it.
A nodal point is the pinneal gland, also known as the third eye. It is the conjunction between intellect and body which the mechanist philosopher Rene Descartes (1596-1650) defined as the exception to a completely mechanical conception of science. For Descartes, being the only part of the brain which isn’t double, the pinneal gland was a privileged point where the mind (res cogitans) and body (res extensa) interact.
The passage of light through the eye to the centre of the brain is reconversed by the pinneal gland which transforms informations into emotions. These then pass through 7 levels of perception, 7 chakras, 7 colours of the iris. The sculpture-installation “The Levels” with plexiglass and iron elements metaphorically evokes the separation of a few organs: the eye, the brain (pituitary/pineal gland) and the vertebral column. Basculating and unstable in its incessant motion tending to the search of balance, “The Center of Gravity” represents the moment in which the need to approach our existence dynamically is rooted within us.
That same dynamic outburst is witnessed in the white marble sculpture head “Ray of Light” and also in “Rainbow Warrior” Unifocus with a dynamic centre. Each one of the seven white heads represents the interaction between light, colour and feeling, where colours are a necessary factor for a universal dynamic outburst A constant perpetual and rotating movement, like electrodes, planets and galaxies.
As a Medieval passage quotes: “Man is free for eternity between infinity and the infinitesimal”, and it is in this endless continuity that we find the 3 elements of the universe in relation: matter, space, time. From three (as the three phases of our existence) wheel-reels unravel beams conducting vital energy of the seven colours of the iris, finally connecting to an eye. The face is endorsed on a wooden stump for a constant energetic interchange between nature and culture, technology and ecology. But it is in the final culmination of unconditional love that the reason of our path is explained. It is the meeting point between philosophy and religion. A state of grace; a sublimation which follows a contrary path to the one of human love. This particular situation in psychology is known as “restitution” and it inverts the natural cycle of life.
The process completes itself without demands, for the sole pleasure of knowledge, unconditionally. If the therapeutical effect of colour on the human organism is due to the natural harmonious oscillation of our cells, discomfort is nothing other than its disharmony. Whether we may want to consider the mechanist positivist tradition or not, there always exists an undefined and indiscernible variable, which doesn’t succumb to the laws of Physics, but which may contribute to define the final result. What we have defined as “consciousness” during the scientific and artistic analysis, is that compassion which makes us feel like a part of all.
